Biography
Amar Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana (1863–1940) was the head of the Shumsher branch of the Rana dynasty and played a significant role in modernizing Nepal during the early 20th century. He introduced several reforms including the first telephone system, postal service, and modern education initiatives. Though the Rana regime is generally viewed as autocratic, Amar Shumsher's modernization efforts brought some progress to Nepal. He was also known for his interest in sports and introduced polo and other western games to Nepal.
